Second Grade News:

-The students turned in awesome animal reports. We are currently working on our power point presentations.

- Important Sacrament Dates-

First Reconciliation Meeting-Thursday-February 18-

Save the date: Multi-Cultural Day Wednesday, March 16

Look what we are doing!

Religion- We are preparing for the sacrament of Reconciliation that the children will receive on Saturday,

February 27. Father will come and practice with the children. Please continue to help your child memorize the Reconciliation prayer.

Math-two digit subtraction-word problems-place value-estimation and rounding-Keep memorizing math facts. 4’s test is on Wednesday, February 17

English-proper nouns-plural nouns that change spelling -adjectives-writing longer sentences

Language Arts-writing five sentence stories with correct grammar-reading literature and writing complete sentences to answer comprehension questions

Social Studies-ancestors-countries around the world-country report-more information will follow

Science-Weather and the Seasons-water cycle-we will make tornadoes, volcanoes and a mini water cycle.

January News

Happy New Year!! Hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed the time with your children.

-The second grade had a great time making ornaments and gingerbread houses during the last week of school. They did an awesome job!

-We will be learning many new things during the month of January:
-Math-regrouping with two digits, place value
-Language Arts-writing penguin stories, snowflake poems. comprehension and phonics.
-Cursive-we will finish learning the capital letters
-Religion-Reconciliation
-Social Studies-Government –Washington DC
-Science-Landforms-Animal report (more information will follow)
-Spanish-vocabulary-fruits-things in your home (We will send home flashcards to practice at home)
-Computer-power point presentation using the animal reports

What is Happening in Second Grade

 

-Math-We are ending a chapter on odd and even numbers, rounding and place value. We will begin a chapter on money-value of coins, addidng money amounts and finding change through addition. Please practice counting money at ;home. We will continue working on math facts-the twos and threes. Please work with flash cards at home.

Language Arts-The children have been writing wonderful Thanksgiving stories. They are remembering their punctuation and grammar rules. They are also proofreading and correcting their mistakes. We are also working on initial blends, word endings and vowels.

Science-We begun a unit on the Solar System. Many of the children remembered facts they learned from their visit to the planetarium.

Social Studies-The class will learn about ancestors and how life was so different long ago.

Religion-The children will begin to prepare for Reconciliation and Advent.

-Thank you for all who drove on our fieldtrip-it was a great day!

October Second Grade News

-Language Arts-Reading, Phonics and Writing

We are off to a great start in our Literacy program! Students have had opportunities write their own stories and share them with the class. The topics have included Halloween themes, Firefighters and animals. We have practiced making predictions, sequencing, using ABC order, deciding between cause and effect, and making inferences. We have also worked with identifying complete sentences, correcting fragments , nouns and verbs, and sentence capitalizing and punctuating. We have read many interesting stories centered around the theme of “Once Upon a Hippo.”

-Math

The second grade are beginning with the concept of place value  and regrouping with two digits. They are working hard to memorize their math facts-we will review the twos and threes. We will also work with graphs-two of the the materials will be Halloween themed- Dem Bones and Spooky cookies!

-Handwriting-Cursive

We have almost completed reviewing all the letters in printing. We will begin Cursive in about one week. The students are very excited. Please help them practice at home.

-Religion

We have completed studying the sacraments of initiation. The students read about King David and psalms, The Good Samaritan and Levi. We talked about being a hero and a saint. The second graders will have a saint report due at the end of the month. More information will follow.

-Social Studies and Science

Our focus in Social Studies continues to be about maps and map reading skills. We are learning about continents, oceans, and hemispheres. The students will also study a banana plantation and begin a unit on ancestors.

In Science, we will be learning about the scientific process and how to use it with our studies this year. We will do some experiments with plants and seeds. We  will also be learning about the formation of landforms on the earth.

Thursday-October 22-Captain Tom Harvey from the San Francisco Fire Department will come to school for a Fire Safety Presentation and Firefighter information for the primary department. October is Fire Safety month.

Friday-October 23-Officer Lewis will conduct a Halloween Safety Presentation.

-Thank you for the book orders-We were able to buy some Halloween and Thanksgiving books and tapes with the bonus points

Dear Families,

This letter will inform you about our activities for September.

Language Arts
This month we started our new theme,
“Once Upon a Hippo”. During this theme,
we will study comprehension skills,
sequence of events, making inferences
and cause and effect. We will learn
about ABC order and multiple meaning
words. We will practice writing stories,
We will emphasize capitalization, complete sentences and end marks.
Math
We are currently working on a chapter about making graphs. The chapter also includes a review of subtraction and addition facts. In addition to the daily work from the book, your child has many opportunities to reinforce skills learned through a variety of different activities in class. One of these activities is working on the computer. The two sites we will be using are:
www.mathsurf.com; and www.aplusmath.com. If you have access to the internet at home, you are welcome to use these sites at home.

Social Studies
We will study map skills, community workers and people we depend to help us in our lives.

Science
We are currently studying reptiles, amphibians and mammals. We will learn the life cycles of animals.

Religion
The students are learning about the seven sacraments. We will concentrate on Baptism. Fr. Suan will come in and explain the sacraments. We are also learning and reading the Good Samaritan, Creation and The Wedding.
